CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR
GRAHAM
HORNER
BRANT COUNTY
Brant County has hard-working people. They
need to be heard. Everyone has a voice.
A conversation with Graham
I am running to be the next Mayor of The County of Brant.
I am the third generation of my family to live on our family farm in St. George. Through my work I have travelled throughout the County and the province. I have had a great opportunity to meet with people and hear the concerns of my fellow citizens.
There is a lot of talent in the administrative staff of the County of Brant and among the citizens of the County. I will use my role as Mayor to see that these two resources meet.
My work has taught me the importance of team building and getting diverse parties to work together. This has been my greatest strength and my core skill.
I will bring a unified strategy that sees this diverse talent working toward the same goals and vision to better our county.
“I will be your voice. Together with Council, we will work as one for our county.”
THE ISSUES
A Practical Plan for
Brant County
Focused leadership on the services, opportunities and character of the communities we call home.
HEALTHCARE
Rebuild the Willett as a full-service hospital
There has been much talk of the building of a new hospital for Brant. I would propose that with our growing population we need two hospitals, and I would propose the rebuilding of the Paris Willet Hospital back into a full-service hospital to serve the needs the County of Brant. A revitalized Willet Hospital will also create stable employment for the citizens of The County of Brant.
01 - EMPLOYMENT
Attract good jobs close to home
We need to attract more industry to Brant County. There needs to be more opportunity for employment locally many people presently have to commute long distances for work. More employment opportunities will allow the County of Brant to offer a better quality of life for its residents. I will ensure the County has a ready supply of commercial / employment land available and that Council that is pro active in attracting business to our County.
02 - 403 CORRIDOR
Develop industrial and commercial land wisely
As your mayor, I would work with council to see that the County continues to develop employment, industrial / commercial land along the 403 corridor. This development will have the greatest effect with the lowest cost by building along this major east / west artery. By providing the conditions in the county to attract well paying jobs, council will serve the citizens of Brant best.
03 · ENVIRONMENT / SUSTAINABILITY
Firm deadlines for infrastructure work
I will work with council to make Brant a great place to live, work and play. I will ensure a strong council voice to preserve the beauty of our county. There has been much talk about the infrastructure construction in the County for the past two years. There have been many concerns over traffic and business obstruction.
I would propose that when new contracts are awarded, they come with hard deadlines for project completion. The other point a new council should consider is property tax relief for the downtown Paris businesses effected during construction.
Council would grant a property tax reduction and encourage this tax relief be passed on to the consumers in the form of sale pricing. This would encourage shopping during the construction as an incentive to shop when it may have been inconvenient.
Why should the County expect to collect full taxation during periods of construction when reduced services are offered.
04 · RESPONSIBLE GROWTH
Protect Brant’s rural character
There is a lot of development and growth happening in our county as we speak, along with massive infrastructure projects throughout the core. This has effected the quality of life for many and continues to do so. There is external pressure to attempt even more growth. This will put enormous pressure on our resources and irrevocably change the character of our county. At this time the strategic preference is that Brant retain its rural character as this gives us the greatest quality of life with the least impact on our surrounding environment.
05 · Relationship with the First Nations of the Grand
Co-operation
I will continue the County of Brants co operative efforts with our neighbours in the Six Nations of the Grand. I will be your voice along with the elected council, we will work together as one for our county.

Community and cooperation
Preserving our history while planning for the future.
Great efforts have been taken by previous councils to preserve the Victorian architecture and look of Brant county. I would continue to work towards this goal, consulting with citizens and working with developers in partnerships to build and preserve our county. For example there is a need for additional office space for county staff, I would support the acquisition of the Penmarvian Mansion in Paris by the county in partnership with a developer as future office space for county staff. A commercial development could be included here as well to offset costs. The Penmarvian Mansion was originally the home of Hiram Capron, the founder of the town of Paris. It is fitting that this historic home should still be able to serve its citizens.
